In the opening session of the 2nd Argentina Seed Congress (November 28-29 in Cordoba, Argentina) Bert van Duijn presented a lecture on the relationship between Standardised Seed Testing and Sustainable Agriculture. The lecture addressed different aspects of seed testing that have large impact on the sustainability of agriculture. Standardised Seed Testing (e.g. the ISTA seed testing system) contributes to reductions in the use pesticides, reduction in cultivation input, reductions in transport etc. hand new developments in (sustainable) seed treatments will require new types of seed testing, e.g. for the application of biologicals on seeds.
